That’s right, 11 first edition cardboard guitars are up at the Hubcaps Diner in Walnut Creek for all to see!
Hubcaps Diner, owned and operated by entrepreneurs Rolla and Mike, is a 50′s style diner with a classic car theme, and has been a favorite spot for my family. I’ve done some graphic design and photography work for them over the years, but that work, while fun and colorful, had still been pretty normal. I’m not even sure owners Mike and Rolla were that aware of my wacky art side, but when they saw the pictures of the guitars they were excited to be the first to host a display.

Over these past months since the creation of the first flying V, I had put four other models of guitars into production: The Explorer, the Moderne, the Jaguar, and the Les Paul. Until now they had all been hanging on my workshop wall just for me to look at, but finally it was time for them to get out and see the world. Now my wall is extremely bare, looks like I need to get back to work and make some more to keep me company.
On a chilly winter evening under the cover of night we went in and did a little re-decorating.
Whenever I see this counter all I can think about is milkshakes…
delicious, delicious milkshakes….
I wanted to do something special as a thank you, so in secret I made a special guitar just for this display, the Hubcaps Custom:
As luck would have it, their logo translated perfectly into guitar form, and now the custom hangs proudly over the cash register.
So far the response has been fantastic! A big thanks to Mike and Rolla, and all the staff who have been so gracious in talking me up to the customers. Who knew a bunch of cardboard would have so many fans! If you’re in the area, come on by and grab a tasty burger and see them up close!
Also, due to popular interest, there are plans to raffle off a second model of the Hubcaps Custom. This super limited edition could be yours. More details coming soon!
